Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5830TG-6614 Review

I did a lot of research to look for a 15 inch range laptop with these requirements, long lasting battery life, thin, 15 inch screen, powerful enough for multimedia, DVD drive, and the price.

For my situation, it has to be a laptop that can store my music files, play them, steam Neflix and Hulu videos, and browsing the internet.

Here is my breakdown of why this Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5830TG-6614 is a great deal for me:

15.6″ Screen, it’s the most robust laptop with a small screen size while it does have a DVD drive.

USB 3.0

Another laptops has 13 inch range screen that features a DVD drive, but the screen felt more flimsy and duller, so they were not good enough for me.

This Acer laptop’s screen has good viewing angles, vivid color, and very sturdy while you open or close it.

The unit itself is portable, sturdy and easy to pack in my back. (I go to work with a bike).

Performance wise, the second generation of intel core i5-2430m processor is more powerful than the first generation with the identical TDP.

This simply means it has more efficiency with energy consumption for computing tasks for a longer battery life, and more powerful processing while multitasking or transcoding. (I got 7-8 hours with this laptop!)

This Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5830TG-6614 includes USB 3.0 port which is very useful if you transfer files a lot.

I have tested it with my docking station (Hard drive) to copy all my files, the USB 2.0 transfers them at 30MB/s, while with USB 3.0 I can transfer at 60-70MB/s. I also like the ability to charge from the port even when your TimelineX  model laptop is off.

The keyboard has chicklet keys, and I love them! Although the minor drawbacks are the blackslash and enter key are placed oddly, but I am easily used to them, and for the touchpad, it is very responsive, never hit it with my palm, so I have no complaint about it.

I also love the side scrolling area on the trackpad.

There is also a nice button in the right corner that you can assign an application to, for instance, I have it for my Firefox button.

Wireless connectivity and bluetooth are great, strong signal everywhere in my house. The 6GB of RAM (yes 6GB!) is more than enough for my computing job, I don’t need more.

The audio quality is very good for a laptop. With or without headphones, the sound is fantastic. (the Dolby Home Theatre audio system enables you to modify its 6 custom settings)

Another small con is the bloatwares, I had to spend one hour to uninstall them and to burn recovery DVDs.

I removed all of preinstalled bloatwares as I don’t need nor want them, and then install my preferred applications, they run great.

I personally love this unit, it is the best 15 inch lightweight device, works with anything I throw on it.

I looked for a light laptop but that can play DVDs, and this unit is exactly what I needed. (get yours here)
