ASUS G53SW-XA1 Review – Overview
I am more than happy to own this ASUS G53SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop for two weeks now.
This laptop came with some other peripherals, but it did not come with recovery disc. So I needed about two or three hours to burn recovery disc with 6 DVDs.
And I spent around two hours to uninstall its junk bloatware, updating the driver, adding some softwares, and updating the Windows, until this laptop was ready to run, and it really rocks. (got it at $999.99 here)
There was a small issue with the Fn keys, as I could not get those keys to work. But it was all fixed by going to Control Panel, and then “uninstall programs” to uninstall and reinstall ATK driver package. Restart the laptop and all fixed without further issues.
The laptop itself is very responsive and very fast.
The hardware on this ASUS G53SW-XA1 , the i7 2630QM processor, 500GB HDD, and nVidia 460m are great this far, and also perform great with modern heavy games. (I played Portal 2 for hours and it was so awesome).
I’ve also had no issues running multiple programs on many windows opened, it runs them all very quiet and nice.
The build quality is very solid, I really like its rubberized light-up keyboard, and it is a full size keyboard that has the numeric pad.
The display is really precise and great. Really bright and high contrast with very good viewing angles for a laptop. (there is no edge bleed through).
The ASUS G53SW-XA1 speakers are pretty decent for a laptop, but obviously they’re still laptop speakers. I would recommend getting a good headphones or some stereo receivers.
If you plan to use hadphones or external speakers extensively, I would recommend try to disable the included “THX” software which is by default enabled, and use the RealTek software instead (also an included audio).
I have tested it, the THX software only runs great with its built-in speakers.
The battery life is not the best, it does not last long will die approximately 2-3 hours, but this machine is a gaming beast, so I don’t really care about the battery life.
As expected, as a gaming laptop the ASUS G53SW-XA1 is quite heavy, it weighs about 8 pounds, but I knew it, this machine is a desktop replacement for gaming.
