Back up and Restore In WordPress

by Kimi on April 13, 2010

I thought doing backup and restore our wordpress website was difficult because we have to go to our database, but i have tried in a test blog, and it was not so difficult.

I hope your sites are secure and you don’t need to do this.

Why do you have to know this anyway?

Because i have read in many forums, lots of people are having troubles due to moving server, being hacked, etc. So I think it’s really useful to be able to make backup of your cool site and restore it back when you need to. I can imagine how terrible it is, after working on our blog for a long time, and spend time or money on it, and suddenly, when disaster occurs, we can’t do anything about it. Of course we all don’t want this bad thing happened.

I always try everything in my local wordpress website (i installed wordpress locally and do what i want by trying stuff). If you want to install it in your PC or Mac, my two videos will guide you how. For mac users, check this post, and for windows user check this post.

A few days before I make this video, I realized there are tons of tips in the internet how to backup, but not to restore. So i thought it will be a tiny help for us all.

In the Video, i am using a useful backup plugin which can be found here. blog seo The plugin is called WP-DB-Backup. This plugin is useful since you don’t need to backup your database manually. I mean it can be scheduled. There are times if you can’t access your dashboard and you need to backup in phpmyadmin, here is the 2 minutes database backup video.

Please be careful with your database, i recommend that you practice this video in a test blog or locally install wordpress as i am not responsible to any damages.

//updates; I have done backup and restore with this wordpress blog for the first time on Friday, June 5th 2010, and i did get an 404 error page when i click post title, this was solved, by going to Admin dashboard/settings/permalinks and just hit “save” . Check your post, and it will work again. Mine was solved this way!

Hey Adam, Good question!, actually i have heard about SQL bigdump, it helps you to load your big dumps. I have never tried myself though.
//update: i have made a tutorial how to use bigdump: http://www.blog.web6.org/copy-live-wordpress-blog-to-computer/

Hello,

Is it possible to restore the blog when all you have is the database?

Hey Eric,

Yes, it is possible. But it will not display anything that were uploaded in uploads folder in “wp-content” folder.

Example, you had a post that has many pictures which were uploaded in wp-contents. When you do restore, you will still have the post, but without the images.

I hope this clears it up.
