Backup WordPress Database [Video Tutorial]

Backup wordpress database is important

I have made a video how to backup and restore your wordpress site, and today i want to show you how we can backup wordpress database easily and quickly, that we will need to do,  everytime we want to change wp files or database.

I always do this quick database backup if i edit these files:
1. .htaccess
2. Trying cache plugins.
3. Change permalinks settings.
4. edit function.php

My personal experience after trying modifying those files or adjusting in a live blog, the internal server error that often happen to this blog, because a few line or single codes can create an issue if you add them in htaccess files.

Luckily, I am now already used to those htaccess file errors, so I know how to fix it. Although always recommended to save those files copy in your computer so when it has problems, you can upload them back.

But that’s not the case, sometimes, we are very inpatient and tried to fix something, but instead of fixing, we can make our problems worse than before, this is why in the very last chance, you can fresh install your blog and restore your database, the importannce of backup wordpress database.

Backup wordpress database – There is more about it!

This is very right and correct, backup wordpress database is the very first essential step what you have to do regularly in your blog, and but that’s not the only “back-up” step we need. In the video where I restore a blog, I actually showed that, after restoring the database that we saved in our computers or desktops, and then we check our blogs, you would find the fact that, your blog did not appear to be your older original blog.

Why can it happen after we did backup wordpress database correctly? This caused by the images that you have ever attached or uploaded to your webserver needed to be restored too.

Those images are actually stored and kept in a folder inside your wp files in your webhost.

That folder is labelled “uploads” and this uploads folder is sitting inside a folder called, wp-content folder.

Bottom line: If you do backup wordpress database, don’t forget to backup wp-content folder too, because this folder contains your images that already uploaded.

This quick wordpress database backup is extremely useful, because when something goes wrong with your wordpress blog, you can restore it easily.

I said this, because i already did a fresh installation of this blog once and restore all including videos. I was sweating!. This is because that was my first time that i did backup my wordpress database and restore my “own live online” blog, which is not a test wordpress blog.

One thing to note, if you install many wordpress blogs with many database, there are cases where you forget which database belongs to associated blog, if you find this issue, you can check the wp-config.php file inside the associated blog, and there you will see the database name.

Backup wordpress database is very easy and quick, have you done it?

Hey Greg,

Yes, backing up database is a must, because we will never know what will happen.

In case something goes wrong, we already have our backup and restoring our site anytime.

I have made a restore in this blog a few months ago with this video: http://www.blog.web6.org/back-up-and-restore-in-wordpress/

Backing up wp-content folder is a must too, since you have images and stuff in this folder.

Thanks for leaving a comment.

Hi There,
I am just starting to set up my website using wp and am learning this process very slowly. I am not computer literate and am doing this by following a book. Somehow i seem to have lost my dashboard and my theme has reverted back to its original colour. I have not added a plug in or changed any code as I stay well clear of the settings.I have tried every combination of my website address with wp-admin or php after it and it comes up with a 404 error. I did not backup before this happened but i dont mind losing my work so far because there are just a few images on the site. Before this happened i was working on my profile in which i added a sml j peg image and some dummy text although this dummy text was me hitting the keyboard. When i uploaded this it didnt look right and brought up 3 copies of my profile. I closed it down for the day and when I next tried to sign in the following day my dashboard had gone. That was 3 days ago and i’m no further forward in finding a solution.. Can you please help me ?

Hi Diane,

I am sorry that this happened to you.

If you have not changed anything nor touch your database, your database is still there.

I suggest you to contact your host immediately, they definitely have a backup of your site. or they will restore your site.

Let me know if this helps

Kimi.
