Install WordPress locally (windows)

by Kimi on February 5, 2010

A video how to install wordpress on local machine (windows). Installing wordpress in local machine is a really good idea, so that we can create new theme, or customize our wordpress blog before we upload it to the server even we can test plugin whether this plugin is fine or buggy.

What we will do in this video tutorial.

1. Installing wordpress using wamp server.
2. Creating a new database, add a username and install the latest version of wordpress which is 2.9.2 english version. Since wordpress 3.0 is out, this can be used to install wordpress 3.0 too. For German version same method, but you can download it here.
I hope my terrible english doesn’t annoy you :D

Hi Dina,

I am so proud of you. I came from Singapore and I can understand your pronunciation and English very clearly. It is very good as English is also my second language.

As I am also new to blog (started this May). I have been looking through all your video. I should say they are very good and precise.Exactly what I wanted.

However, after I install the wampserver and click on the phpmyadmin, the page say cannot find server…link broken….just don’t know what to do next. I reinstall a second copy and the same thing happened. Sian !!

BTW, after i installed the wp_DB_backup 2.2.2 plugins, got an email with the attachment, once i open it, it reads :

Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will help you find software needed to open your file.

File Type: GZIP compressed archive file

File Extension: .gz
Description: GZip files contain one or more files that have been compressed and packaged into an archive file.

Software or information available at:

* Aladdin Systems Stuffit for Windows
* WinAce
* WinImp
* WinZip
* BitZipper

You may search the following Web site for related software and information:

* Search the web

Have questions? See these Frequently Asked Questions.

So it is different from your video. Which one should i choose ?? winzip, when I click on it, must pay…..

@NoviceBee

1. Thank you for the encouraging comment!! :D I’m so glad that you can understand me very well, i am trying to improve it everyday :D
This is weird with your wampserver, that never happened to me, how about downloading a fresh new one and try to install it again?
What OS do you use?
Let me know if it works

2. About the wp-db-backup, it’s probably happening because of the new version, when i made the video, i still had the previous. However you can ignore the email, and just do backup. If you ever have to restore your database (I hope you won’t need to do this) you don’t have to open this zip filetype unless you must open the file to update “URL” or some infos (example you change your domain), if you need to open it, winzip and winrar work fine. They are not free, but have free trial.

Good luck with your new blog! :D

Hi Dina. I’ve installed wordpress in my window. Is there anyway that I can rename my blog url so that there is no more ‘localhost’ in my blog url as I find it quite disturbing. Another question, is it possible to access my wordpress account by using other pc, i’m sorry to ask all these..i’m so confused at the moment. thank you in advance.

@Lisa, Hi there :)

No, unfortunately we can’t remove the “localhost” because it is the local server that hosts our local wordpress blog.

Yes, as i am aware of, of course you can access your “local” wordpress account by using other PC as long as this PC has a local server, can be using WAMP, XAMPP, or other local host servers.

Let me know if you have more questions.

@Dina, wow that’s really a quick reply. another question, so in order for others to access my blog they have to use the url that has ‘localhost’ as well?

@Lisa, hey sorry to interrupt you don’t have to reply this. I totally understand the whole thing now, silly me..read something about this and it cleared my confusion about this. thanks alot..glad i found your blog, very helpful I must say.keep the good work up.

Dina July 31, 2010 at 7:33 pm

@Lisa, It is totally alright, there is no silly questions :)

Yes, other people can’t access your blog, because it is hosted locally in your pc, in order to make your blog “online” and accessable by other people, you have to host it online (by using webhost provider, there are free hosting and paid one).

Thanks for your encouraging comment.

Hi Dina,

All went well, till I reached
Create a configuration file then Clicked Let’s Go!
And filled all the required fields clicked SUBMIT
and then I got the following message:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Hi Sains,

I would check wp-config.php if your database name, username, etc are correct. If everything is correct, then it should be your local server. Sometimes it can caused by your other windows software too.

Try to re-install again in the worst case, and lets see what happen, if it is still the same, then it is your computer.

Kimi.

I had installed and created wordpress on a localhost. I already used it for my final project and built a website. How can I use it again and create another site?Do i have to create another database again?I remember using wordpress on line for blogging, there is an option in creating a new blog. And I keep on looking for it on my localhost, but i can’t find it.

Thank you and God bless!

Hi Anna,

There are some methods having multiple wordpress blogs in one database, however I have never tried it.

I usually create separated database for a new blog in localhost.

Thanks

Kimi.

I ran into the exact same problem as Sains. So I decided to try a different video….with all due respect, there is a much easier way to do this – Here:

You might want to link to this video for people who have problems with yours.

Thanks anyway
