Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Review

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Review – Overview

I have played around with Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook (Arctic White) two days ago, and I certainly would think, that a Chromebook cannot be used for your main home computer (can’t run Photoshop on this thing!), it won’t replace your computer that has a local storage, this appliance is made for people who are on the go.

From the appearance, there is nothing special about Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, it has a mid range laptop size, but lighter, it weighs about 3 lbs.

Since the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is running on Chrome Operating System, as long as you are familiar with Chrome browser, you are good to go.

It also means this appliance is a browser netbook, that connects to cloud services for file storage and other apps. Honestly, I don’t really like the “cloud-base” thing, because I would not store my important stuff in the cloud because of the security and availability.

There are a lots of thing that can happen to the datas that are stored in the cloud.

For example, if that host’s competitor has an attempt to see or steal those datas? or if someone attacks that cloud (eg. DDOS attack) then our datas could be gone until their cloud service is restored again or even gone forever.

There is one big advantage of the cloud file storage if the cloud host is “reliable”, you will just need your backed up datas if your Chromebook is stolen or lost.

You can access your datas for any places you want. Cloud-based services are the technology’s futire, you can sync your datas that are stored in the cloud with your smart phones, home computer anywhere.

However, I would still prefer to store my important datas and have a full control of them, since we will never be sure of what can happen if something happens about our datas that I thought it was secure.

One good example is the Wiki leak issue.

As an device or appliance, the function of Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is similar to tablets.

Tablets are appliances that used more for multi-media, photos, video and audio comsumption, and the Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook is absolutely great alternative to those tablets if you are more into web browsing than apps.

The keyboard of Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is very easy to use, but the biggest letdown for me is there is no “delete” key and “caps lock” key.

So if you will use this device to type alot, anything which requires typing capital keys or the CAPS lock, you will need to hold down the shift key in order to have all caps letters.

I think it is really weird that this Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook does not include standard caps lock key.

If Apple products have iTunes, this Samsung Series 5 Chromebook has Google music.

You can purchase any music files from Amazon, and play those music in Amazon’s cloud player, and when Google enable the functionality to upload music to Google music in Chromebooks, you can then download your music from Amazon to Google music.

The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook comes with free 100MB for two years from Verizon, you can have unlimited plans if you need more.

For instance, daily unlimited, you can pay $10 and $50 for 5GB a month (there isn’t monthly unlimited).

What about Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Price? As an alternative to tablets with its limitations and advantages, I think Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is very expensive.

Although this appliance is a quite powerful device, but it is not as attractive as the iPad, and you can get an iPad for this price. Furthermore a Netbooks are sold much cheaper and it has more capabilities. You will feel that you are owned by Google with this Chromebook.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Review – Summary

Why did I purchase this Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook?

I am curious with the Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook and its Chrome operating system, and I was excited to experience and try a new technology. Lightning fast to turn on and fast speed performance since it has the SSD (Solid State Drive). Runs very cool, and it has incredible long lasting Battery life, I had 8 hours battery life with heavy usage and it has 4G Connectivity.

This Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is obviously not meant for everyone, it is best for student or people who want to experience new technology.

I think Google is going to be able to do a much better job of backing up your data than you could ever dream of. Google has so much infrastructure that your data is replicated on many devices.

Compare this to the single external drive you have in your house, or CD’s, or any other device that can be easily destroyed by fire, being dropped, electrical spikes, theft, etc and it’s very clear that the cloud is a much safer bet.

As for security, I seriously doubt Google sees you as a threat to where they’d feel the need to look into all the pictures of your cute puppy or your kids birthday party.

Even businesses who store the data on the cloud shouldn’t be worried. Google’s reputation is their only currency, and if they were to shatter that reputation by compromising the data of their users then people would lose their trust in them.

If I were Google, I would keep that data safe, and if I were you, I wouldn’t be so skeptical of the cloud when it comes to world renowned vendors who rely on their reputation to remain global leaders.
