Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/W Review – Great Laptop For Basic Computing

Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/W 14-Inch Laptop (White)

The very first thing you will notice is this Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/WA 14 inch laptop is a sleek portable machine and it does look great. (see more pictures here)

The laptop’s lid is kind of matte silver and also the keyboard does have matte white finish while the rest has glossy white combined with a sparkling glitters effect.

I thought it was more “female” laptop, but then the glitter effect is actually hard to notice, also when you look at it very close, hardly noticeable, so this machine is definitely for all.

Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/W performance wise, it features 2.2GHz i3-2330M Intel Core processor, so very quick to open applications, although I would strongly suggest to remove some bloatware which are preinstalled to speed this beautiful machine up. (except if you need those programs, then don’t uninstall!).

The 14 inch screen is very bright, but quite glossy to me. My usual setting for brightness would be around 70-80%.

This Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/W came with many USB ports, and if they are not enough for you, you will be able to use the SD card slot, also the HDMI port works great if you want to attach your laptop to a television or external monitor. The graphics card runs 1080p videos very well.

This has 500GB hard drive (at 5400RPM) which is definitely enough for any computer users, but almost everyone needs an external hard drive these days. The 4gigs of RAM lets Win 7 runs very smooth.

Setting up the wireless connectivity was very fast than my previous Lenovo laptop, but burning the recovery disks took ages, almost 2 hours! (you will need 3 DVDs at least!).

I think it is fair to say, that there are a lot of Sony bloatware which came with this machine, however, there are some useful software.

The Sony VAIO Care, which is the update application is really helpful. Whenever the latest drivers are updated, you will need to search the internal things, you can easily run your Vaio Care, and it will go downloading and installing all of the necessary updates.

This software will look for any updates for the Windows too, but Windows performs it itself by default. There is also a helpful software to check and notify you about your laptop’s health.

Ms Office starter version includes Excel and Word applications, which are working just fine, although my main point of criticism is the annoying ads on the right side.

The “Web” button is a quick access to internet. Let’s say you need to open Google and look for an information very quick, and you don’t want to wait for a few minutes to boot your system, you can easily press this web button which is placed near the power button to start Sony’s unique web only booting. It does take less than 25 seconds to load up the web browser, very convenient and useful.

The “Assist” button provides a really straightforward and well designed interface to run restore as well as maintenance features. I’m happy to have a registry’s defrag program in this machine.

Even though a few days is not long to take with this machine, I really loved it.

It may not end up being the best machine available, or include the largest hard drive, or even the greatest battery life (it has decent battery life, approx 2.5-3 hours, depends on what kind of programs usage), however, overall performance, clear and vivid 14 inch screen, trendy finish, and included Sony functions like the Web quick button is great for instant access, make this Sony VAIO VPCEG2DFX/W is by far the perfect portable laptop I’ve used.
